History
Chambers of Commerce exist to:
- Provide strong local bodies to negotiate with local authorities and Government
- Provide an authoritative source of advice, information and referral to the local business person
- Generate/encourage investment into its region
- Liaise with local colleges and businesses about skill requirements and educational quality
- Stimulate tourism
- Promote products and services
The organisation was formed in 1870 and was affiliated to the British Chambers of Commerce as the ‘Newport Chamber of Commerce’. The Chamber was later incorporated under the Companies Act on the 24th April 1884.
30th January 1948
Chamber name changed to:
‘The Newport and Monmouthshire Chamber of Commerce (Incorporated)’.
3rd February 1975
Chamber name changed to:
‘The Newport and Gwent Chamber of Commerce (Incorporated)’.
17th November 1987
Chamber name changed to:
‘The Newport and Gwent Chamber of Commerce and Industry’.
4th May, 2000
The Chamber was re-branded to become “ngb2b” but retaining its identity as ‘The Newport and Gwent Chamber of Commerce and Industry’
1st April, 2003
The Chamber merged with Newport & Gwent Enterprise to become the Newport & Gwent Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise & Industry
